@Richard Stapleton Richard I’ve lived in the US for several years now and
I’ve seen first hand the way your society works and it’s not exempt of
racism. The civil rights movement brought the US to a more civilized level,
I’d say to the same level of the rest of the world, because blacks were not
even allowed to share the same facilities with whites. It was a systemic
cancer. Now it has changed very much for the better and, supposedly, the
law finally looks everyone as equals. But only the law.
What happened in the US is far different from what happened in Latin
America. You cannot try to compare both in a parallel manner because the
development of the racial problematic happened differently. In the US the
settlers didn’t mix. The group of Europeans that came wiped out anyone who
wasn’t similar to them and only allowed anyone different if they worked as
slaves. The separation of the races was there from the beginning of the
republic all the way till now. You can see the government and institutions
figuring out a way to classify people using ethnic nomenclatures: White,
Black, Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander and so on. For
that same reason is that you have now what is known as chinatowns,
koreatowns, barrios, ghettos, etc.
What happened in Latin America was different. You’re talking about Spanish,
French, Italians, Portuguese people who came, settle and almost immediately
mixed with the locals. Hence, you see now members of the same family with
similar traits in all shapes and colors. I can offer you the case of my own
family in which one of my sisters and I are dark skinned but the rest of
them are fair skinned with light green eyes. The same phenomena runs on the
rest of the family and we all are very close to each other.
That’s the reason why in Peru is very difficult to find real natives or
blacks unless you go the reservations where they voluntarily want to live
in seclusion, something similar to the Amish culture in your country. Same
happens with some Afro descendants who want to live in the city Chincha and
enjoy their culture. Yes, it is true people still struggle with some form
of racism, but the racism this documentary talk about is more of a kind of
classism disguised as racism. I’m not saying there’s no racism but is quite
different than the one you have in the US which is kind of a silent
apartheid the government and the media implicitly reinforce. When you say
«white» and the US it evokes a completely different kind of cultural trait
than the one of «blacks». in Peru «white» (blanco) is just a color of skin,
that’s it, and «black» negro brings exactly the same. I call my own cousin
«negro» being him a person with darker skin than I. Now, the word «cholo»
is more of a demeaning term that is more related to lack of sophistication
and manners. Rather than relating it to an ethnicity, because in the end we
all know we have some of it in our blood.
I think this documentary is effective on unveiling a class rhetoric in the
language of the people. Which compared to the American psyche is
fundamentally different since Peruvians delve on the aesthetics only.
Americans find human beings of different colors (in America shades are
pretty much not considered) different in essence.

un buen amigo cusquenio muy joven que triunfa en florida como paramedico y
es muy pero muy respetuoso, so se dara cuenta no son todos los peruanos,
lastimosamente la gran mayoria….(sin palabras). Y Por que le duele tanto
la opinion personal de una persona, pareciera que le salpico, No sufra y no
envidie a los demas…….

Hay mucha discriminación en el Perú, no podemos negarlo. Desde pequeños
hemos aprendido que el blanco(a), alto(a), es mejor por la apariencia
haciendo sentir mal al que no lo es. Pero cuando envejecemos cómo nos
vemos?. Tal vez con el tiempo sean los valores los que predominen y vivamos
en un Perú mejor.
yo no soy racista, ni clasista, soy peruano orgulloso exista o no el
racismo… pero lo que si me llega es un chileno como tu, que se cree
superior siendo igual a nosotros.. a si que chileno, puedes meterte tus
