The grim legacy of America’s treatment of its native peoples is explored in detail in this documentary. Filmmakers Robin Davey and Yellow Thunder Woman take the perspective that if one is to define «genocide» as the a deliberate effort by a government to exterminate a people, then the United States is clearly guilty of the crime given their actions against America’s indigenous population over the past 300 years. Davey and Thunder Woman back up their argument with footage detailing the economic marginalization of American Indians, the consistent violation of legal agreements reached with native tribes, the mismanagement and consistent neglect of Indian reservations, the brutalization of Native Americans as they were segregated onto flinty soil and forced to live under substandard conditions, and the refusal of the mass media to report stories of suicide and Columbine-style school shootings among reservation youth. The Canary Effect was screened in competition at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

but who were the first people on earth what race? this is what everybody fighting is all about your all a bunch of dumb idiots I wad here first no i was
This was a very well produced Documentary and it is a national Disgrace for the U.S.A. that none of those absolute realities have been resolved from over 500 years ago and even before that. But most certainly from when they formed a national Government who consistently and continually broke their TREATIES with the NATIVE AMERICAN people and refuse to pay what is long overdue them. They then allow them to live in worse than Third World conditions where children U12 Commit Suicide and 10 Boys made a Suicide Pack and one by one after throwing LOTS killed themselves and yet if 10 White boys did that there would be uproar both Nationally and Internationally. It seems the powers that be are ignoring all the problems and could not care less if their original plan for Genocide is fulfilled at the Indians own hand. These people need HOPE and LOVE and SUPPORT and they need it NOW!!
Shame on President Nixon's Speech they more than made a mistake they DID NOT ALLOW THEM the Native Indians to CONTINUE IN THEIR LIFESTYLE which they had followed for thousands of years. And it is not about making wealth and money it is about living in communal love and sharing the land belongs to all the people who were there for centuries before the settlers came and STOLE the LAND not for a few to make money out of OIL REVENUES or other natural ores. Those who sold the Indian lands did not have the authority to sell it as they were few in number who signed instead of by agreement of the majority but then the hidden goal was after all GENOCIDE. ABSOLUTE EVIL
Choking…
Many human beings lost tribe connections, because someone just wanted to survive, so took their family and 'passed' in cities.
Reagan understanding Natives? Allowing Natives to keep their traditions? NOT!! Mighty White of 'im, feigning worried concern and ignorance….said similar about mental patients all turned out of the mental hospitals he closed, to be street people.
"Gotta do something before it looks almost shameful…'? Phfffft! Too late.
Bribed legislators vote corporate agendas that massively pollute Rez environments ….yet the same suddenly think providing centralized, privatized services will fix it?!?
Human beings need restoration of traditions, communities, families, real and humane ways to make a living, get healthy food and water…etc…none of which has been offered by the powers that be……those keep offering more control, funding only with caveats preventing really using the funding, lest that reveal the gov'ts and industries complicit destructions.
States are blackmailing Nations to fork-over gaming monies etc.
Good old Ahnuld…he's from Austria, and should never have reached the office of governor. But he's part of the problem.
All the gaming was taken over by foreign interests before any casinos got built; the money earned from those mostly benefits non-Natives. .
Like the fancy horseshoe glass walk on Grand Canyon…all foreign-owned and profited from….then, once the place started needing big maintenance, turned it over to the Tribe to 'fix' it and start earning income from it…and had to struggle with anti-Native blockades to access.
Janet Reno has a world of bad karma on her, for what she did; IDK of anyone more severely a mental deviate, than maybe Himmler…oh wait…Bush would be in that boat, too. .
This should be required viewing in all schools, all legislators, churches, …everywhere. Tie 'em to their chairs and make them listen, if necessary.
Then, keep it coming. Maybe, make this broadcast on all media, simultaneously, from hacker servers….
This film should be shown at schools. It is true American history. "True" is not the make believe story of a peaceful gathering, Thanksgiving etc. We finally did away with Columbus Day now it's time to get rid of Thanksgiving which was created to celebrate massive Native American exterminations! Disgusting! It's astonishing that people think I am a "weirdo" because I do not celebrate Thanksgiving. Wow. I am realizing how shallow and cold people can be. People don't like to talk about what really happened and rather forget and stuff themselves silly. How sad.
In case you didn't know Esau (the so called white man) is the devil.
The same thing is happening to the Aborigines in Australia.
the spanish the english the french and the dutch and irish .. finished off 95% of the original population of north and south america. David Stannard' research Books The American Holocaust accounts approximate to 12 Million plus people. The generations of europeans who spread disease and waged war and enslaved the natives were proud of their acts. Blessed by God Himself they said. The european and american white genocide of natives is the biggest hidden shame of america. A violent empire founded on a genocide.
I realized that Pres. Reagan was an ignorant man but never so much as pertaining to Native Americans. How nice of him to want to "take care" of them. What a patronizing thing to say. The Great White Father has spoken. Mighty white of him to give indigenous people the choice of 'becoming one of us' or to continue to "live in their primitive ways".As a white man I realize that I can never undo the injustice and genocide which my people have inflicted upon them. The very least that I can do is to open my mind and heart and learn from them and to respect them as unique human beings, ask their forgiveness, and relearn the history of this country which is stained with the blood of injustices.. It is ironic that, with all the suffering inflicted upon them, indigenous people throughout the world are at the forefront of the current movement to teach the world that the Earth and it's resources are sacred and must be protected, once again, from the greed and destructive tendencies of the ancestors of the same whites who raped, pillaged, and plundered their way throughout history in the name of Manifest Destiny. We whites will either come to terms with our criminal ways and learn to live in harmony with our planet and it's people of color or drag us all into the sewage of our past.
This is a very sad documentary and shows what colonialism actually did to native peoples in many lands around the world and particularly here in the Americas. The old adage "power corrupts and total power corrupts totally" really applies. People that are greedy and have enough power will always overpower others and kill them or bend them to their purposes.
I actually visited the Cherokee reservation when I was in grad school and saw some of the problems they talk about first hand. The casino there is successful and the tribe put strict guidelines before they allowed it to come in. They obligated the casino to pay each cherokee nation member a stipend that they can access at a certain age (I want to say 18, but I could be wrong, it's been several years since I was there). They also stipulated that the casino pay the tuition of any tribe member to attend any college (full ride, all expenses paid). Despite that, they have huge issues with alcoholism and drug use. They also have issues with diabetes, which the speakers related to genetics, but also mainly to a lack of healthy food options available (there were literally only fast food places on reservation and one native place) their native diet also consisted of high calorie and high carb foods (they showed us samples of native cuisine and preparation). They said that this dietary restrictions combined with genetics and possible alcohol abuse caused a lot of early health problems that affected a large portion of the population on res.
In addition to this, they said that even with scholarships on offer, most kids chose not to leave the res. and if they did leave, they soon came back within a few years, usually not finishing college. Most kids got jobs in the local medical facility and the high school had a nursing training program to help them start to get an nursing certificate before graduating.
They also commented on why kids come back to reservation if they leave, etc. and said that they had a very tight sense of community and that kids would get "home sick" and miss their people / tribe on the outside, causing them to come back. They also spoke about broken homes and family relationships… A lot of single parent houses and also a lot of kids raised by aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. (This reminded me of similar issues seen often in inner city neighborhoods / public housing). We talked to several H S students and they said that the community is very "open" about sleepng with people when you are young and / or having kids very young and most people don't get married. That there isn't a big emphasis on close family, it is more of an emphasis on "the tribe" as a family as a whole.. That they treat everyone as family even if not directly blood kin.
Overall, I found the environment there depressing… It was almost like I felt a "weight" while on reservation… I felt very sad for the people and knew that I personally couldn't help them. They told us that outsiders, even long-term people (non-natives) are seldom accepted into the community or trusted…Even people that lived / worked there for over 20 years, etc. are still held in distrust by many. Many of the areas on the reservation were kept up for tourism.. a lot of people had jobs working the casino, the tourist shops, performing shows, other than that, the main employer was the hospital. We kept to the main part of town, so didn't see much that was in bad condition, but I did some some shacks and a trailer park in one area. We toured the high school (we spent a day shadowing students, talking with them, etc.) we also went to the hosptial and the native heritage center in town.
What I took away from my visit was that there are a myriad of factors that are oppressing the Cherokee… drugs, alcohol, depression are a big part, but there are other social issues that are playing a role as well. I would imagine that growing up in a culture where you feel that you can't trust outsiders (obviously from the video), you feel that there is no hope for improvement of your situation, and you have no close / stable family ties to be role models / for support (i.e. parents that are alcoholics, not present, abusive, etc.) is just a toxic brew that many kids can't take.
Just propaganda to breed hate.
Now get up and stand for the national anthem lol………….shiiid!!!!&?
This is too sickening to watch………….Now who were the savages again???????????
And these are the savages that our world holds as heroes and we still honor their murdering salvage evils by nationally celebrating them today.
